Features of the Festival include the Doug Kessler Lightning 5K/10K race, a juried Artist’s Market, Business and Civic Expo, a Children’s Park, Collector’s Car Show, Kiwanis Pet Parade, Heritage Crafters, Live Entertainment, Food Court, Whole Foods Heritage Homegrown Market, Saint Joseph’s Hospital Health & Wellness Area, and more.
Runners will want to go ahead and register now for the 5K or 10K in order to save some money. The 10K and 5K entry fee is $20 if received by Thursday September 1st; then the price increases to $25 if received by Thursday September 15th, and $30 if received after the 15th or Race Day.
As for the pet parade, you can register in advance or on Saturday, September 17th before the parade begins. Opening to the public on August 10, 2011 “Heroes of Sandy Springs,” is a new exhibit in the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum that draws on historical photographs, archives, artifacts, and film clips to tell the story of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs. Located in the Williams-Payne House at Heritage Green, the exhibit will be on display through February 15, 2012.
The exhibit actively engages visitors in learning about the long, but little known tradition of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs by examining the roots of policing and fire/rescue as the Sandy Springs community developed and grew in population and ethnic diversity.
Heroes of Sandy Springs will be located in the changing exhibit galleries of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum. Each room will feature interpretive panels containing historic photographs and narratives and cases will display artifacts including badges, patches, equipment and other significant items. Visitors will be inspired by the stories of all volunteer groups that worked tirelessly to protect our community, and how the small volunteer forces became the world-class, professional departments that Sandy Springs has today.
Museum hours are Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. Museum admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12, $1 for senior citizens 65 and older and free for Heritages Sandy Springs members and children ages 5 and under. The gift shop is open to the public free of charge. The Museum is located at 6075 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Parking is available on Sandy Springs Place in designated parking lots.
