Sandy Springs and other cities across the nation are committing to a simple motto: “active kids are healthy kids” and National Kids to Parks Day encourages residents to use local parks and recreation sites to develop more active, healthy lifestyles.

Nothing better than some locally grown produce for your family. Sandy Springs kicked off the farmers market in May and continues until October.

The Sandy Springs Farmers Market is where friends and neighbors gather to share the experience of a community farmers market. Every Saturday morning, 45+ vendors, musicians, and local residents gather for a “first name” shopping experience.

Grab your friends, family and pets and join in on Saturday morning for a truly enjoyable community gathering. Start your morning off with a cup of freshly roasted coffee and a delicious sausage biscuit, then shop for local, naturally grown produce, pasture-raised meat, farm fresh eggs, and all kinds of specialty food items. Or, just hang out at the picnic table and play games while enjoying live entertainment by one of several market musicians.

The market will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 every Saturday at 235 Sandy Springs Circle NW, Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328, which is the parking lot of the former Target shopping center at Sandy Springs Circle and Johnson Ferry Road.

In addition to fresh fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers, the Market will offer an assortment of other local and seasonal products, such as:

• Honey, jams, jellies, pesto, granola, salsa and other specialty foods
• Local Dairy Products, including specialty cheeses, milk and eggs
• Regionally raised grass-fed beef, pork or poultry
• Fresh Baked Breads
• Artisan Products

Concerts by the Springs is an annual series of free outdoor concerts, open to the public. Now celebrating its 17th annual year, the series is held at Heritage Green, on The Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn, 6110 Bluestone Road. Scheduled on Sunday evenings throughout the summer, this season will feature five unforgettable performances with a variety of popular music.

Kicking off the 2013 Concert by the Springs season will be The Tams. The Tams have been entertaining and thrilling audiences for over 50 years! Known for such hits as “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy”, “What Kind of Fool”, “I’ve Been Hurt” and “Untie Me”, The Tams have had 2 Gold Records, and 1 Platinum Single. “What Kind of Fool” hit #9 on the Billboard charts, and #6 on the R&B charts. “Hey Girl Don’t Bother Me” hit #1 in the UK in 1971. While “Be Young, Be Foolish” only hit #26 on the Top 40, the single sold over 1,000,000 copies, sending it to Platinum status. Though their style of music has historically been referred to as Beach Music, it can be also classified as a mixture of Smooth Soul, and R&B. Their show is fun, fresh and exciting and appeals to audiences of all ages and musical tastes.

All concerts are from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and are FREE to the public.

Gates to the Entertainment Lawn will open at 5:00 p.m. to DISCOURAGE people from setting up blankets early to reserve excessive areas of the Entertainment Lawn. Please be considerate of others.

Food & Beverage

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to participate and enjoy the beautiful setting and friendliness of the community. Picnic baskets, coolers and blankets are welcomed; no outside tables please.

Additional food will be available for purchase from specialtiy food vendors and food trucks.  Beer, wine, sodas and water will be available for sale.

USA Crit Speed Week is upon us, and all races point to Sandy Springs. Speed Week is a series of 7 races that take place over 10 days, beginning with the Athens Twilight and ending in Sandy Springs. $150,000 of prize money is up for grabs for the men and women elite/professional teams partaking in the series.

Back for its sixth year, Global Imports will present the Sandy Springs Cycling Challenge on Sunday, May 5th at Heritage Sandy Springs at City Walk. Benefiting the Sandy Springs Police and Fire Departments, this enjoyable event has something for everyone. Enjoy watching bikers speed past down “Mount Sandy Springs,” or tickle your taste buds by trying many of the samplers from the local restaurateurs at the Taste of Sandy Springs, sponsored by Gas South.

The cycling races begin at 9 a.m., while the tastings begin at 11 a.m. There is no admission fee, but delicious samples may be purchased for $1 per sample ticket.

GA 400 Hospitality Highway Century 2012 will be the fourth edition as GA 400 is temporarily closed for this popular event!

The ride starts at exit 7 of Georgia Route 400, and will wind through Sandy Springs, Milton, Roswell, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and other scenic areas of North Fulton. There are 9-mile, 23-mile, 60-mile, and 100-mile options.

The 100 mile ride is over 8500 feet of climbing up short steep hills that build your base strength! Perfect training for that fall triathlon, or that late season race, or maybe you just want to burn over 8700 calories! The 60 Mile ride also ascends 5500 feet and will climb the “Three Sisters” same as the 100 milers do. The Three sisters are three short climbs near the end of the ride in Roswell. You will have cheering fans as you pedal squares up the Big Sister in Mountain Park and Middle Sister as you pound your way through Wildwood Springs and finally you will roll up the Little Sister in Waverly Hall. Look for the local kids to have lemonade stands as an excuse to stop or use the cheers of neighbors to help you up the hill

The start/ finish point is located in the former Home Depot parking lot, next to the Publix, in the Kings Market shopping center, in Roswell. The exact address is:

The 2012 Sandy Springs Artsapalooza will be held July 7 – 8, 2012 in Atlanta, GA. This inaugural event is a two day outdoor fair to celebrate art in the new city of Sandy Springs, Georgia. The event will include a children’s play area, local musicians, plus up to 150 arts and crafts participants. The festival location is in the heart of Sandy Springs, near interstate access and all things Atlanta.

The Sandy Springs Artsapalooza is a two-day outdoor event with an emphasis on the visual arts and handcraft. Located in the heart of Sandy Springs in Fulton County, they set out with many different goals in mind: 1) Give back to the community through art; 2) Create a venue that emphasizes local and Georgian artists, so they have a show they can depend on in their own back yard; 3) Bring a festival to the folks in the northern part of Fulton county; 4) Create a festival for Artists by Artists, letting the artist have a voice in the creation and operations of the festival; 5) Create a show unlike any other in the City of Sandy Springs, bringing together outstanding local, regional and national artists.

The festival will be held from 10-7 on Saturday, July 7, 2012 and from 11-6 on Sunday, July 8, 2012.

The festival location is in the heart of Sandy Springs, near interstate access and all things Atlanta. The site is less than one mile from Interstate 285, Roswell Road exit.

Legendary 4th at Lenox Square Mall

Atlanta’s Lenox Square is home to the Southeast’s largest celebration, attracting more than 200,000 people annually. Lenox Square’s annual event is patriotic fun with family-friendly live musical entertainment on the mall’s outdoor main stage. Culminating the evening will be the signature fireworks display, featuring thousands of fireworks bursting in air for approximately 20 minutes, accompanied by a patriotic musical soundtrack. The fireworks display starts at approximately 9:35 p.m.

4th of July Celebration at Centennial Olympic Park

Come celebrate Centennial Olympic Park’s 4th of July Celebration with a night of fun and entertainment for the entire family, including downtown Atlanta’s best fireworks display. Park gates open at 6 p.m. and fireworks start at approximately 9:40 p.m. The finale of the evening is Centennnial Olympic Park’s Fireworks Spectacular, Atlanta’s best fireworks display synchronized to a special selection of patriotic and popular music.

Decatur’s Pied Piper Parade, Concert & Fireworks on the 4th

Join Decatur’s July 4th Pied Piper Parade as it winds through downtown Decatur. Decorate your wagon, ride your bike, skate, or walk in this event. The City Commissioners will lead the parade in the mini-firetruck. Neighborhoods and organizations are encouraged to make floats and join the fun. Parade line-up is at the First Baptist Church of Decatur at 5:30 p.m. The parade begins at 6 p.m. It ends at the Community Bandstand on the square with a presentation of colors and the Star Spangled Banner. The fireworks display starts at dark.

Roswell’s 13th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza

Show your patriotism by celebrating our Country’s Independence Day in Roswell with entertainment and a breathtaking fireworks display. This year’s July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza will take place at Roswell High School located on King Road off of SR 92. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. At dark, a beautiful 30-minute fireworks display will be the highlight of the evening. Bring your chairs, blankets and picnics for an old fashion family outing.

July 4th Festivities and Fireworks at Wills Park in Alpharetta

Children’s activities begin at 4pm on the event lawn, behind the Alpharetta Community Center. Entertainment from local bands will be from 6pm to 9pm behind the Community Center. The fireworks show begins at dusk.

Red, White and Brew Beer Fest at the Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium is hosting a Fourth of July celebration. Sample great beer and enjoy a classic 4th of July barbeque at the coolest location in the city to view the Centennial Olympic Park firework show. Live music compliments of the Yacht Rock Schooner. Tickets are $55 per person.

Marietta Fourth of July Celebration on the Marietta Square

The city of Marietta’s Fourth in the Park celebration begins Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at 10 a.m. and includes a parade, free live concerts, museum tours, arts and crafts show, food, carnival games and fireworks finale.

Stone Mountain Park: 45th Annual Fantastic Fourth Celebration

Don’t miss the 45th Annual Fantastic Fourth Celebration! The Atlanta Journal-Constitution readers have voted Stone Mountain Park as the best place in Atlanta to enjoy fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday. Enjoy the Lasershow Spectacular in Mountainvision each night on July 3 & 4 followed by a special, patriotic fireworks finale on both nights!
