Great news. It appears that Santa is on schedule and is heading across the Atlantic Ocean as we write this. So it may be time to get the cookies and milk ready and get the kids tucked into their beds for the night. Santa is on his way to the Sandy Springs area, so be ready.

If you’re one of those people who have actually lit a fire in their fireplace in this warm weather, make sure you put it out before Santa arrives. He never likes it when his britches get singed.

Sandy Springs Homebuyers – Homebuyer Tax Credit Extended

Sandy Springs home buyers, you may yet get that homebuyer tax credit after all. This week, the Senate passed a bill to extend the $8,000 homebuyer tax credit until September 30th. It now goes to President Obama, who is expected to sign the bill. The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the House on Tuesday. The deadline had been June 30th to close on the property.

After a close brush with the deadline, Congress passed an extension of the Homebuyer Tax Credit closing deadline, the Homebuyer Assistance and Improvement Act (H.R. 5623). The extension applies only to transactions that have ratified contracts in place as of April 30, 2010 that have not yet closed. The legislation is designed to create a seamless extension and the new closing deadline for eligible transactions is now September 30, 2010. There will be no gap between June 30th and the date the President signs the bill into law.

Before you get too excited, the bill doesn’t help anyone currently shopping for a home. Buyers must have signed a contract by April 30th to qualify for the tax break. At issue is when the deal must be finalized.

Repeat home buyers also have until September 30th to close on new homes and receive a tax credit of up to $6,500.

Congress has been trying to pass the extension for the last month, but it got caught up in the usual Washington politics. The extension is estimated to raise the deficit by $9 million.

An estimated 200,000 people have missed out on the tax credit because they wouldn’t have been able to close by the end of business Wednesday. Many are trying to take advantage of short sales, which are complicated deals to complete.

Sandy Springs four fire stations and police department headquarters are taking unwrapped toys for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) this holiday season. Donations may be made until December 21st at the following locations:

Sandy Springs Fire Station #1, 1425 Spalding Drive
Sandy Springs Fire Station #2, 139 Johnson Ferry Road
Sandy Springs Fire Station #3, 6025 Heards Road
Sandy Springs Fire Station #4, 4697 Wieuca Road
Sandy Springs Police Department Headquarters (9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.), 5995 Barfield Road.

CHOA serves patients from infants through 21 years of age. The toys will be delivered by the Sandy Springs fire and police personnel on December 23rd to patients who are in Children’s Hospital of Atlanta during the holidays.

Every Dog Has Its Day…Eventually

Sandy Springs dogs would be disappointed to know that a tract of land proposed to provide them with a playground has been deemed to valuable for dogs. The proposed dog park was to be erected at Great Park at Morgan Falls, an area north of Morgan Falls dam, however after city workers removed bamboo from the bluff a stunning riverfront view was revealed.

It appears as though plans for the dog park have been put on permanent hold while city officials decide how to proceed. The view from the bluff is quite extraordinary and many city officials feel it would be better served as an oasis for Sandy Springs residents, not their dogs.

As it stands, city officials will continue to search for a location for the dogs, but for now they’ll have to wait to have “their day”.

If you are in search of a local dog park to take your four legged friend, try the East Roswell Park’s dog park, which is just north of Sandy Springs or Piedmont dog park just south of Sandy Springs.
