Speeders Beware! The City of Sandy Springs is cracking down on violators in school zones, and is doing so in an eco-friendly manner. They have begun installing solar powered speed radar signs in school zones and other locations identified as critical to the safety of residents and students. The scope of work includes installing 21 solar powered speed radar signs, to be completed by mid-August.
Improving safety and pedestrian access to local schools is an ongoing priority for the City of Sandy Springs. Since incorporation, the City has constructed over five miles of sidewalks within a half mile radius of local public schools. Sandy Springs has also installed solar flashers at school crossing zones. Have you ever wanted to help in an emergency?
If your answer is yes, we need you to be a part of CERT!
The Sandy Springs Fire Department is offering CERT training to our community. The goal is for SSFD to provide training on basic response skills to members of neighborhoods, community organizations, communities of faith and businesses. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response in their area in times of need.
Each CERT member will learn basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following and event when professional responders have not yet arrived on the scene.
CERT training is divided into four classes, and to become a CERT member you must attend all four classes. The classes are offered on Saturday mornings throughout August, with the first class on the first Saturday in August and the fourth class on the fourth Saturday.
If you have any questions, please contact Logistics/CERT Coordinator James Laudermilk at 404-368-6490 or by email at james.laudermilk@sandyspringsga.org.

Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Utilizes QR Codes
June 6, 2011 by lauraeverett
Sandy Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR), an innovative leader in medical advances and fire rescue technology, is pioneering another technology—Quick Response or QR Codes on their vehicles. QR codes are matrix barcodes that are readable by dedicated QR code readers and smart phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.
The code used by SSFR will direct users to the Department’s web page: www.sandyspringsga.org/ssfr, where users can get the latest information on CPR and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes, fire guidelines and ordinances, to sign up for classes and more. To read a QR code with your smart phone, you’ll need a QR code reader application. Search your smart phone’s app store and you’ll find a variety of free readers.

Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department (SSFRD) was named a Heart Safe Community by the International Association of Fire Chiefs at the EMS Section annual meeting in Las Vegas last week.
The award is sponsored by Physio Control and it recognizes fire-based EMS and other EMS systems that have used creative approaches to implement and maintain systems that prevent and treat cardiac related diseases within the communities they serve. The award looks at communities holistically and how the Department integrates systems to work symbiotically. Agencies must show how they have improved the quality of out-of-hospital resuscitation through bystander CPR, AED deployment, out-of hospital 12-lead ECGs 12-lead ECG advanced notification to the receiving hospital and other continuous quality resuscitation improvements.
SSFRD won in the small community (under 100,000 population) category. SSFRD has yielded a bystander CPR performance rate of 59 percent in 2010, which was more than twice the national average. Since 2007, the Department has trained more than 4,800 residents in CPR and AED use and placed more than 156 AEDs in the City saving 17 lives. The Department has also launched a pilot program to train emergency medical technicians to use hypothermia treatment for cardiac arrest victims.

City of Sandy Springs is Purchasing Flood Damaged Homes
April 30, 2011 by lauraeverett
Using state and federal funds, the City of Sandy Springs plans to purchase six houses that were damaged in the 2009 flood. In fact, the city recently closed on the first one. Not only will these efforts help the current homeowners, but they will positively affect the Sandy Springs real estate market in general by eliminating unsellable lots.
After purchasing the homes, the city will demolish them and then level the lots. The six homes in question all have substantial damage from multiple floods. The city received $2.7 million to complete the project, but as part of the program, the homeowners must agree to pay 15% of the demolition costs.
The first property is located on Pine Forest Road and was purchased for $400,000. The second home, located on Hitching Post Trail, should be closing soon and was sold to the City for $385,000. The remaining four homes are also located in the same area. It is expected to take up to a year to complete work on all homes. Read more

Sandy Springs Creates Energy-Efficient Firestations
April 17, 2011 by lauraeverett
Setting a wonderful example for the rest of Georgia as well as their own residents, the City of Sandy Springs relies on solar power for Fire Stations #1 and #2. The installation of the solar photovoltaic (electric) and solar thermal (hot water) systems is the first for a local government in Georgia. The 2.35kW PV systems and 4-panel, 200 gallon hot water systems will offset the energy needed from natural gas to heat water for kitchens, laundry and bathrooms and from electric for powering lighting, appliances and other devices within the Fire Stations. The solar energy systems will produce a collective amount of energy annually totaling 81.7 million BTUs and more than 6,000 kWh.
As a Sandy Springs resident, hopefully the installation of these solar energy systems inspires you to make your own home more energy-efficient. Or, if you are in the market for a new home, purchase an energy-efficient home. Many home builders construct green homes that meet or exceed standards for LEED certification and EarthCraft House. Yes, typically these homes tend to be a little more expensive, but they also reduce utility bills, saving you money in the long run. Plus, it is still a buyer’s market, and if you search wisely, you will no doubt find a green built home at a comparable price to a home that is not energy-efficient. If you need any help in searching for a green-built home in Sandy Springs, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sandy Springs to Improve Fire Stations
March 27, 2011 by lauraeverett
Great news for Sandy Springs fire stations 1 and 2 as they are set for some safety improvements. The city’s fire rescue service has received the Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and they have decided to use the money by installing sprinkler systems in these two stations. Now the city’s firefighters will be better protected at work, allowing them to perform their duties with peace of mind. The award period of this grant is February 18, 2011 to February 17, 2012, with approved amounts of $49,500 for station 1 and $60,500 for station 2.
A program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, grants are awarded to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the public and fire service personnel from fire and related hazards. Three types of grants are available: Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG), Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) and Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S).

Sandy Springs Implements Hot-In-Place Recycling
March 3, 2011 by lauraeverett
With the new asphalt pavement preservation that the City of Sandy Springs utilizes, you have yet one more reason to be proud to call Sandy Springs home. Considering all of the benefits of this technique it is a wonder that Sandy Springs is the first place in the southeastern US to begin the project, which is called Hot-In-Place Recycling. Hot-In-Place Recycling is a process of correcting asphalt pavement surface distress by softening the existing surface with heat, mechanically removing the pavement surface, mixing it with a recycling agent, possibly adding virgin asphalt and/or aggregate and replacing it on the pavement without removing the recycled material from the original pavement site.
The procedure may sound complicated, but it actually is a pretty simple process. Residents’ inconvenience will be minimal as it takes only one day to recycle and then one day to micro-surface. In addition to the environmental benefits, Hot-In-Place Recycling is economical and produces a smooth, durable surface that will last many, many years. Some of the streets in the program include Aerie Court, Franklin Road, Helmsley Drive, Lackland Court, Marilyn Place, Morganshire Place, Mountain Brook Lane, Tanglewood Court, Tanglewood Trail, Valemont Drive and View Hill Court.
