On December 5, 2011, the Georgia Department of Transportation will hold a public information open house concerning the proposed road improvements at SR 400/US 19 and CR 145/Northridge Road. The hearing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at the City of Sandy Springs City Hall, 7840 Roswell Road, Building 500, Sandy Springs, Ga 30350.

The proposed project NH000-0056-01(061) consists of 0.4 miles of widening along Northridge Road from Somerset Court to just west of Dunwoody Place. Northridge Road from Roberts Drive to Dunwoody Place will consist of six 11-foot travel lanes. The westbound lanes will consist of one free-flow right lane from the SR 400 northbound exit ramp to Dunwoody Place with a 2-foot separation from one shared through right turn lane, a dedicated through lane and a dedicated left turn lane. The eastbound lanes will consist of dual left turn lanes from Northridge Road to the SR 400 entrance ramp and a shared through right turn lane to Roberts Drive. Sidewalk will be on the south side of Northridge Road. The design speed is 35 mph to be consistent with the posted speed on the existing road. Widening of the bridge over SR 400 is proposed along the north side of the existing structure only. The bridge deck is proposed to be rehabilitated and a roundabout is being considered at the Northridge Road and Somerset Court intersection.

The purpose of this open house is to provide the public with an opportunity to view the proposed plans, ask questions, and to comment on the proposal.

The meeting will be informal and the public is invited to attend anytime during these hours. There will be no formal presentation.

The long-awaited Hammond ramps, located within the city limits of Sandy Springs, will open to the public September 2. The ramps will offer access for the first time to Georgia 400 at Hammond Drive.

The ramps will provide a north entrance and a south exit along Georgia 400, offering a new gateway to Metro Atlanta’s largest office district. They are part of the nearly $18 million Hammond Half-Diamond Interchange project that also includes a new, wider Hammond Drive bridge across Georgia 400.

The interchange was developed through a partnership of Georgia Department Of Transportation, which funded the $12 million cost of the bridge, and the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, which contributed $5 million for the ramps. The City of Sandy Springs Development Authority financed the PCIDs’ portion of the project, saving the organization $500,000 in interest fees. Sandy Springs also contributed $150,000 for lighting, fencing and other upgrades to the Hammond Bridge.

The opening of the ramps will complete nearly two years of construction on the Hammond Half-Diamond Interchange. The ramps and replacement of the four-lane Hammond overpass with a nine-lane, higher bridge are designed to meet current and future traffic volumes. GDOT also added an auxiliary lane from the north entrance ramp to the Abernathy Interchange at Georgia 400.

Focusing on a firm’s experience with bridge repair or construction, availability for an immediate start and price, the City sought bids from four companies and awarded a contract to Engineered Restorations, with a not to exceed bid price of $83,000, $7,000 less than the next lowest bidder. Engineered Restorations began work on Friday, August 19 and estimates that the repairs will be completed no later than September 16, weather permitting.

Speeders Beware! The City of Sandy Springs is cracking down on violators in school zones, and is doing so in an eco-friendly manner. They have begun installing solar powered speed radar signs in school zones and other locations identified as critical to the safety of residents and students. The scope of work includes installing 21 solar powered speed radar signs, to be completed by mid-August.

Improving safety and pedestrian access to local schools is an ongoing priority for the City of Sandy Springs. Since incorporation, the City has constructed over five miles of sidewalks within a half mile radius of local public schools. Sandy Springs has also installed solar flashers at school crossing zones.

A National Safe Kids study of 27 cities found that of the vehicle speeds recorded during the 30 minutes before and after school, 65 percent of drivers exceeded the posted speed limit with 23 percent of these drivers traveling at least 10 mph above the speed limit and 33 percent traveling 30 mph or more beyond the limit.

The solar powered speed radar signs were purchased and installed using funds from the City’s award under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. EECBG is intended to assist qualified recipients to develop, promote, implement and manage energy efficiency and conservation projects and programs that will reduce carbon emissions and create and retain jobs.

With the new asphalt pavement preservation that the City of Sandy Springs utilizes, you have yet one more reason to be proud to call Sandy Springs home. Considering all of the benefits of this technique it is a wonder that Sandy Springs is the first place in the southeastern US to begin the project, which is called Hot-In-Place Recycling. Hot-In-Place Recycling is a process of correcting asphalt pavement surface distress by softening the existing surface with heat, mechanically removing the pavement surface, mixing it with a recycling agent, possibly adding virgin asphalt and/or aggregate and replacing it on the pavement without removing the recycled material from the original pavement site.

The procedure may sound complicated, but it actually is a pretty simple process. Residents’ inconvenience will be minimal as it takes only one day to recycle and then one day to micro-surface. In addition to the environmental benefits, Hot-In-Place Recycling is economical and produces a smooth, durable surface that will last many, many years. Some of the streets in the program include Aerie Court, Franklin Road, Helmsley Drive, Lackland Court, Marilyn Place, Morganshire Place, Mountain Brook Lane, Tanglewood Court, Tanglewood Trail, Valemont Drive and View Hill Court.

River Valley Road Sidewalks Construction
Construction is underway on sidewalks on both sides of River Valley Road from Riverside Drive to Amberidge Trail. This project, originally developed by Sandy Springs Revitalization, Incorporated, involves construction of new curb and sidewalks as well as associated driveway tie-ins and utility relocations. Repaving is scheduled upon project completion. An overall construction period of six months is planned. To date, new retaining walls, curbing, sidewalks and driveway tie-ins have been installed from Riverside Drive to Colewood Way.

Lake Forest Elementary School Sidewalk Design
A consultant is designing a sidewalk on Lake Forrest Drive from the I-285 underpass to Hammond Drive to provide improved pedestrian access within the neighborhood. The project includes improvements to the intersection of Lake Forrest Drive and Hammond Drive. Requests for variances to support proposed construction are currently under review.

Ridgeview Middle School Sidewalk Design
A design is underway to develop a complete sidewalk system along Peachtree-Dunwoody Road in the vicinity of Ridgeview Middle School. Surveying began along the portion of Peachtree-Dunwoody Road from the Glenridge Connector to Trimble Walk Lane to include indentifying specimen trees near the proposed route. An online public survey was conducted in December and a preliminary study plan was shown during the January 12, 2009 City Open House. A presentation of preliminary concept plans is being planned.

Riverwood High School
Construction is complete on this project to install sidewalk on one side of Powers Ferry Road from Dupree Drive to Heards Drive. Pedestrian crossings and ramps were also constructed at Heards Ferry Road and Heards Drive.

Woodland Charter Elementary School
Sidewalks have been installed on one side of Spalding Drive from the school to Georgia 400.
