Veterans Day Ceremony
November 9, 2010 by aaronhofmann

Veterans Day is a day to honor ALL American veterans and is intended to thank them for their dedicated and loyal service to our country. On November 11, 2010, the City of Sandy Springs will celebrate our veterans.
The City will host our inaugural Veterans Day Ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at Morgan Falls Overlook Park (220 Morgan Falls Road).
“As a veteran and a public servant, I think it is appropriate that we stop and pay tribute to all of those who have gone before us and those who are currently serving to keep us free,” said Sandy Springs City Manager and Col. John McDonough. “We can’t ever lose sight of what this day means—it really is special, and I’m humbled that Sandy Springs chose to do something to honor our veterans both past and present.”
The celebration’s keynote address will be given by Lt. Gen. R. Steven Whitcomb (Ret.), who served in many capacities during his 30-year career with the US Army. Most recently, Lt. Gen. Whitcomb was appointed as the 63rd Inspector General of the Army, a post from which he retired in August of this year. The celebration also will include the posting of the colors, a military band and a salute to veterans, among other things.
Parking is provided at North Springs United Methodist Church on the corner of Roswell and Morgan Falls Roads. There will be no onsite parking. The shuttles start at noon. If you need special assistance to the event, please call Erika Sherman at 770-206-2019. If you are a veteran, we want to honor you.

Daylight Savings Time Ends

Attention Sandy Springs,
For most Americans, daylight saving time ends in 2010 at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, when most states fall back to standard time. Time will spring forward again on March 13, 2011, when daylight saving time resumes.
The federal government doesn’t require U.S. states or territories to observe daylight saving time, which is why residents of Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Marianas Islands won’t need to turn back their clocks this weekend.
While most of us plan to embrace that blessed hour (by sleeping right through it), the time change can throw a few people for a loop.
To avoid having your body clock disrupted, even if you can’t sleep an extra hour, stay in bed with your eyes closed. If you want to get up, don’t go outdoors. Draw the blinds and don’t have lots of sunlight come into house. This could help your body adjust to the time change.

Sandy Springs Election Day 2010
November 2, 2010 by aaronhofmann

| November 2, 2010 | ||
| 7:00 am | to | 7:00 pm |
Election Day is today, November 2, 2010. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and any voter in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote. Voters must have an acceptable form of photo ID with them to vote. Based on experiences from 2008, voters who go to the polls after 10 a.m. will most likely encounter a short wait.
The Fulton County Department of Registration & Elections staff reminds voters to check their proper locations before heading to the polls on today. The easiest way to check is to visit the My Voter Page on the Secretary of State’s website.
Employers are also reminded that Georgia law requires employees be allowed two hours off to vote on Election Day. The polls are open for 12 hours, so most people have an opportunity to go before or after work, but employees working a 12-hour shift must be allowed to break to vote.
Any voter who has a question about the ballot that displays on the touchscreen voting equipment must get the attention of a poll worker before touching the “cast ballot” button. Once you hit the “cast ballot” button, your vote is final. For more information, call 404-730-7072 or log onto www.fultoncountyga.gov/county/elections

Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Open House
September 28, 2010 by aaronhofmann

| October 5, 2010 | ||
| 6:00 pm | to | 8:00 pm |
The Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department is hosting an exciting event in our community. This years theme is, “Smoke Alarms, A Sound You Can Live With.” The event will be held in celebration of Fire Safety Week on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at all four of Sandy Springs Fire Stations:
Fire Station #1, 1425 Spalding Drive
Fire Station #2, 135 Johnson Ferry Road
Fire Station #3, 6025 Heards Road and
Fire Station #4, 4697 Wieuca Road
The City of Sandy Springs urges you to invite all of your elementary and middle school aged students and their siblings to this Open House to learn valuable fire safety lessons from Sandy Springs finest firefighters. They will teach children fire safety and prevention through enjoyable activities such as friendly firefighter and fire house presentations. The goal is to have fun while educating at the same time. Firefighters will cover topics such as EDITH (exit drills in the home), the meeting place, stop/drop/roll and various other fire safety topics. The Open House will also give the students a chance to interact with the firefighters while experiencing a small part of the roles and responsibilities of the firefighters. Station tours will also be available.
Fire Prevention Week is actively supported by fire departments across the country. For 85 years, fire departments have observed Fire Prevention Week as part of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This makes the week the longest running public health and safety observance on record. We hope you will become part of this tradition.
For more information, or for answers to any questions, please contact Capt. Mark Ware of the Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department, at 770-730-5600 or by e-mail at mark.ware@sandyspringsga.org.
