Citizens to Vote on Sunday Alcohol Sales Legislation

800px Liquor store in Breckenridge Colorado 300x225 Citizens to Vote on Sunday Alcohol Sales LegislationDon’t like the fact that you can’t buy alcohol on Sundays? Well, as a Sandy Springs resident, you are going to get a chance to vote on changing the law. On August 16th, the Sandy Springs City Council voted 6-0 to put the question of whether to allow package alcohol sales in Sandy Springs on Sundays on the Nov. 8 ballot. However, the council has the option to back out if the cost of putting it on the ballot is too high.

If the question remains on the ballot, and is passed, then the new law would take effect January 1, 2012. It would allow retailers to sell alcohol between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The Sunday alcohol sales has been a debate in Georgia for years, and allowing Sunday sales in a metro Atlanta city would be a tremendous change. What do you think about the bill? What are some reasons to continue forbidding the sell of alcohol on Sundays? What are some reasons to change it?

Since Spalding Drive is a major east-west thoroughfare through the “panhandle” area of Sandy Springs, the City determined that it was appropriate to enter into an abbreviated contracting process to repair and reopen Spalding Drive as quickly as possible. Focusing on a firm’s experience with bridge repair or construction, availability for an immediate start and price, the City sought bids from four companies and awarded a contract to Engineered Restorations, with a not to exceed bid price of $83,000, $7,000 less than the next lowest bidder. Engineered Restorations began work on Friday, August 19 and estimates that the repairs will be completed no later than September 16, weather permitting.
