Opening to the public on August 10, 2011 “Heroes of Sandy Springs,” is a new exhibit in the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum that draws on historical photographs, archives, artifacts, and film clips to tell the story of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs. Located in the Williams-Payne House at Heritage Green, the exhibit will be on display through February 15, 2012.
The exhibit actively engages visitors in learning about the long, but little known tradition of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs by examining the roots of policing and fire/rescue as the Sandy Springs community developed and grew in population and ethnic diversity.
Heroes of Sandy Springs will be located in the changing exhibit galleries of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum. Each room will feature interpretive panels containing historic photographs and narratives and cases will display artifacts including badges, patches, equipment and other significant items. Visitors will be inspired by the stories of all volunteer groups that worked tirelessly to protect our community, and how the small volunteer forces became the world-class, professional departments that Sandy Springs has today.
Museum hours are Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. Museum admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12, $1 for senior citizens 65 and older and free for Heritages Sandy Springs members and children ages 5 and under. The gift shop is open to the public free of charge. The Museum is located at 6075 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Parking is available on Sandy Springs Place in designated parking lots.

Sandy Springs’ Huntcliff Gets a Movie-Makeover
July 27, 2011 by lauraeverett

As if Sandy Springs weren’t fabulous enough, now the city is going to be immortalized on the big screen. Earlier this month, Hollywood flocked to our vibrant north Atlanta city to film The Three Stooges. More specifically, they zeroed in on Huntcliff, one of Sandy Springs’ most popular neighborhoods. They didn’t make any drastic changes to the community, just a few subtle differences like adding a sign to the clubhouse. So, in the upcoming movie, set to be released sometime in 2012, keep an extra close eye out for Huntcliff’s pool and clubhouse, as well as any other images that may have made it past the cutting room floor.
If being the set for an upcoming movie makes Huntcliff more appealing to you as a home shopper, then take a look at some of the properties currently for sale:

Friends of Sandy Springs Awarded the Sticks for Kids Excellence Award
July 17, 2011 by lauraeverett
The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) Foundation and National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) are proud to announce the recipient of the inaugural Sticks for Kids Excellence Award: Friends of Sandy Springs Foundation in Sandy Springs, Ga.
The award is meant to honor an outstanding junior golf program that has utilized its granted Sticks for Kids program to the fullest potential. That can be accomplished by establishing and growing a junior golf program and using it as an outreach and youth development tool for area youth as well as a means to grow the game.
Friends of Sandy Springs Foundation started Sticks for Kids programming in 2010 and through the Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department it has taken a multi-pronged approach to support the youth in its community. A no-charge afterschool program has been established at three elementary schools in the community with demonstrations, drills, skills contests and game activities three times a week while school is in session. Another program is held during summer camp and many of the children attend on scholarship and are introduced to golf for the first time.
The Sticks for Kids Excellence Award will be presented at the GCBAA Summer Meeting, Aug. 10 to 12, in Atlanta, during the special 40th Anniversary Recognition Dinner Thursday evening.
For more information about the event or Sticks for Kids, contact the GCBAA.

Have you ever wanted to help in an emergency?
If your answer is yes, we need you to be a part of CERT!
The Sandy Springs Fire Department is offering CERT training to our community. The goal is for SSFD to provide training on basic response skills to members of neighborhoods, community organizations, communities of faith and businesses. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response in their area in times of need.
Each CERT member will learn basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following and event when professional responders have not yet arrived on the scene.
CERT training is divided into four classes, and to become a CERT member you must attend all four classes. The classes are offered on Saturday mornings throughout August, with the first class on the first Saturday in August and the fourth class on the fourth Saturday.
If you have any questions, please contact Logistics/CERT Coordinator James Laudermilk at 404-368-6490 or by email at james.laudermilk@sandyspringsga.org.

Call for Entries for the Sandy Springs Playable Art Park
July 7, 2011 by lauraeverett
By the Fall of 2012, Abernathy Road will have a completely different look. The Sandy Springs Conservancy and Art Sandy Springs have joined forces to create the Playable Art Park at Abernathy Greenway. These are two different components: the Abernathy Greenway and the Playable Art Park. First, the Abernathy Greenway is going to be a mile-long stretch of greenspace situated on both sides of Abernathy Road. For those that travel on this highly congested stretch of asphalt every day, the new park will provide much more beautiful scenery.
In addition, the Greenway will be home to the Playable Art Park – an innovative and fun way to expose children to art. Funded by Northside Hospital, the Playable Art Park will help children experience art by encouraging them to climb on it, jump from it, crawl through it, move it and just plain play around it. This unique play space will inspire children on many levels.
Making the new play park even more a part of the community, local artists or teams of artists are welcome to submit original artwork to be considered. Applications are being accepted through October 1, 2011. Read more

Serrano Condos Now #1 in Atlanta
July 4, 2011 by lauraeverett
According to the latest report from Smart Numbers, Serrano has become the number one selling condo community in Atlanta. In the first quarter of 2011, the Sandy Springs new home community had a total of 32 closings. And, if their Facebook updates are accurate, the community’s sales did not diminish in the second quarter, reaching a big milestone of their 100th closing in June. With such success, the community is over two-thirds sold and down to a limited number of available units.
Serrano features one, two and three bedroom condo units at an incredibly reasonable price. The average selling price of homes in the first quarter was $145,444, and these condos are approved for FHA financing. Being situated in Sandy Springs, Serrano offers homeowners convenient access to Buckhead, downtown Atlanta and all of the shopping and dining destinations of Perimeter Mall. As for the units themselves, you’ll be pleased to find hardwood floors, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, double vanities, garden tubs and more. Basically, it’ll be hard to find another community that has such a desirable product for this affordable of a price. No wonder they are the number one selling condo community. Read more
