City of Sandy Springs is Purchasing Flood Damaged Homes
April 30, 2011 by lauraeverett

Using state and federal funds, the City of Sandy Springs plans to purchase six houses that were damaged in the 2009 flood. In fact, the city recently closed on the first one. Not only will these efforts help the current homeowners, but they will positively affect the Sandy Springs real estate market in general by eliminating unsellable lots.
After purchasing the homes, the city will demolish them and then level the lots. The six homes in question all have substantial damage from multiple floods. The city received $2.7 million to complete the project, but as part of the program, the homeowners must agree to pay 15% of the demolition costs.
The first property is located on Pine Forest Road and was purchased for $400,000. The second home, located on Hitching Post Trail, should be closing soon and was sold to the City for $385,000. The remaining four homes are also located in the same area. It is expected to take up to a year to complete work on all homes. Read more

The time has come for Sandy Springs residents to support the local arts. As you know, Act 3 Productions is the professional-level community theater group located right here in our own backyard. Every season, they delight us with amazing performances of some of the most beloved plays and musicals. Well, after many years, Act 3 Productions will proudly present a Readers Theater performance of its first-ever original musical, By Wheel and By Wing.
Under the supervision of playwright and composer, Corey Jan Albert, the play was created by nine local students from Galloway, North Springs, Paideia, Riverwood, Roswell and Walton high schools. It tells the remarkable true story of the Parnes family, who fled their native Poland during World War II. Many years later, the entire family made it to the United States, where they have since prospered. Descendents of two of the seven children who fled Poland now reside in the Atlanta area. Read more

Sandy Springs Creates Energy-Efficient Firestations
April 17, 2011 by lauraeverett
Setting a wonderful example for the rest of Georgia as well as their own residents, the City of Sandy Springs relies on solar power for Fire Stations #1 and #2. The installation of the solar photovoltaic (electric) and solar thermal (hot water) systems is the first for a local government in Georgia. The 2.35kW PV systems and 4-panel, 200 gallon hot water systems will offset the energy needed from natural gas to heat water for kitchens, laundry and bathrooms and from electric for powering lighting, appliances and other devices within the Fire Stations. The solar energy systems will produce a collective amount of energy annually totaling 81.7 million BTUs and more than 6,000 kWh.
As a Sandy Springs resident, hopefully the installation of these solar energy systems inspires you to make your own home more energy-efficient. Or, if you are in the market for a new home, purchase an energy-efficient home. Many home builders construct green homes that meet or exceed standards for LEED certification and EarthCraft House. Yes, typically these homes tend to be a little more expensive, but they also reduce utility bills, saving you money in the long run. Plus, it is still a buyer’s market, and if you search wisely, you will no doubt find a green built home at a comparable price to a home that is not energy-efficient. If you need any help in searching for a green-built home in Sandy Springs, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Georgia’s only Mormon temple is situated right here in Sandy Springs, and for the past two years it has been undergoing a serious renovation. Well, the new construction is complete and the facility is officially reopened, and there is a small window of time before the formal dedication in which the general public is welcome. Bear in mind that this temple has not been open to the public since 1983, and once it is formally dedicated on May 1, 2011, there is no telling how long it will be before you are given another opportunity to take a peek inside.
So, find some time between now and April 23, 2011, to take a tour of the temple. Being the first Mormon temple in the Southeast, not only is the building aesthetically impressive but it is also a little piece of history. In addition, you will likely get a better understanding of the Mormon faith and their traditions by visiting the temple. Considering the tours are free of charge, you really have nothing to lose.
