Tin Can Fish House and Oyster Bar Opens

Anyone looking to try one of the latest restaurants to open in the Sandy Springs area should make plans to dine at Tin Can Fish House and Oyster Bar. The seafood bar is the latest from Sandy Springs restaurateurs Nik Panagopoulos and Arte Antoniades, who you will know for their established Mexican joint, Teela Taqueria. Once you step through the front doors, the bright, tropical colors and fish decor will make you feel like you’re on a beach vacation, despite the fact you are actually in City Walk at Sandy Springs.
In addition to the fun atmosphere, patrons will be happy to find an expansive menu that includes many seafood favorites as well as some fare for the land lovers. Of course, it wouldn’t be an oyster bar without oysters on the half shell. They even run oyster specials on Monday and Tuesday nights where you can get 25¢ raw oysters at the bar. Read more

Will Sandy Springs Become a College Town?
January 26, 2011 by lauraeverett
City officials are hoping that one day Sandy Springs will indeed become a college town. Now, when we say “college town” we are not referring to places like Athens, GA where the whole city revolves around one of the state’s largest universities. No, in Sandy Springs’ case, the city will welcome a satellite campus for Gwinnett Technical College. In a public town meeting held on January 18, 2011, Mayor Eva Galambos and other city officials approved a proposal to bid for the new campus with a 4 – 3 vote. It was a close call, but after the heated debate, Sandy Springs is officially in competition with Alpharetta and Roswell to become the new location of a Gwinnett Tech campus.
It will be a while before we find out which city is chosen, but the addition of a college campus could mean great things for the local economy. It would bring more jobs to the area as well as a myriad of daily consumers. Sandy Springs is offering land at the North Springs MARTA station for the campus. Read more

Park Towers II is probably the most luxurious apartment community in Sandy Springs. Residents are given first class service with amenities like 24-hour concierge service and on-site dry cleaning service in addition to tennis courts, fitness center, swimming pool, jacuzzi, club room with billiards and more. The luxury high-rise is one of the tallest buildings outside of the Perimeter and features floorplans ranging from one bedroom/one bath to three bedrooms/three and one-half baths, many of which offer breathtaking city views. With such a prestigious reputation in the area, it may come as a shock that the building recently sold for $39.9 million.
Park Towers II development purchased the luxury tower from Julian LeCraw & Co. Inc. in what is now Atlanta’s latest high-profile multifamily transaction. Park Towers II is an affiliate of Crescent Heights, a condo and apartment developer. Read more

This past week brought a crazy winter storm that is rare for Atlanta and it kept us snowed in for days. Now that the ice is finally melting and we are able to enjoy some outings, it’s time to celebrate winter with Sandy Springs at the Winter Festival. The event is scheduled for Friday, January 28, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend as the festival is open to the public, and the best part is that it is free!
They will have a huge bon fire, which will be the setting for a big marshmallow roast as well as keep you warm when the sun goes down. Another way to stay warm is by enjoying a delicious cup of hot cocoa. In addition to the winter-themed refreshments, attendees can play carnival games, make crafts and enjoy a “Georgia style” snow play area with sledding. Of course, the kids have probably spent the last five days enjoying real snow, but that won’t make the Winter Festival any less fun.
So go ahead and make your plans to attend the 2011 Sandy Springs Winter Festival at the Hitson Memorial Activities Center off of Mt. Vernon Highway.

Sandy Springs Fire Rescue was recognized for being a Heart Safe City.
One thing that significantly contributed to this award is the fact that all personnel in the Fire Department are trained in CPR and AED. Having this requirement has increased the out-of-hospital survival rate for cardiac arrests. In fact, Sandy Springs is well above the national average in this respect.
Sandy Springs Fire Rescue also employs state of the art technology such as the LUCAS2 chest compression system and cold therapy for cardiac arrest victims prior to arriving at the hospital. Read more
